Elder Stay@Home Care Worker Training

Aloha,

The Kupuna Education Center is excited to offer our Elder Stay@Home Care Worker training session!  With the assistance of a national MetLife Foundation/International Longevity Center grant for caregiver training at community colleges, we are modeling our plans based on the Certified Home Caregiver Training Program developed by the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education of Arkansas.

Level I:  Elder Pal

Students who successfully complete the 25 hour Elder Pal level of training should achieve a level of competency appropriate for providing care to individuals in need of supervision and minimal assistance with activities of daily living. Elder Pal graduates are trained to provide age appropriate companionship, safety and support in the home or assisted living setting.  Students receive classroom instruction and skills demonstration and practice.  To receive a KCC certificate, students must have a cumulative score of 80% or above on all assigned work and exams.  In addition, students must also give a successful return demonstration of required skills.

Prerequisites:  18 years or older, TB Test, successful application.  To apply call 734-9108.  Course Fee includes Student Workbook, DVD and loaned textbook.

Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease Training

This 16 hour class provides education that focuses on the care needs of persons with dementia. Various types of dementia are reviewed with person-centered care featured. Caregivers learn special techniques to care for an elder with dementia.

Prerequisites:  Completion of Elder Pal Training or current CNA certification. Course Fee includes Student Workbook and loaned textbook.

Level II:  Personal Care Assistant

Students who successfully complete the 25-hour Personal Care Assistant training achieve a level of competency appropriate for providing "hands-on" care for individuals who need minimal to moderate assistance with activities of daily living. The Personal Care Assistant training builds on the Elder Pal training by providing additional information and skills instruction.

Prerequisites:  Successful completion of Level I Elder Pal.

Level III:  Home Care Assistant

Students who successfully complete the 35-hour Home Care Assistant training achieve a level of competency appropriate for providing "hand's-on" care for individuals who need moderate-to-maximum assistance with activities of daily living.  Students are instructed on assisting individuals who have advanced medical problems and complex or chronic health conditions.  Graduates can perform routine nursing-related services in home care agencies and similar settings under the supervision & direction of a licensed nurse or family member.  The Home Care Assistant training builds on the skills learned in the Personal Care Assistant training.

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Level II Personal Care Assistant.

Transfer Workshop for Home Care Workers, CNAs, and Family Caregivers

Do you need to brush up on your transfer skills? This 3-hour workshop will provide you witht he correct transfer techniques of an alder from the bed, chair, wheelchair, and car. All participants will practice the skills with assistance from Ann Low, PT and the students in the KCC PTA program. Students will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Instructors:

Theodora Harrison, RN. "Teddy" Brown Harrison is an RN who has worked in a wide variety of clinical settings in acute- and long-term facilities on the mainland and in the US Army Nurse Corps, hands-on and supervisorial. She has case management experience with Medicare Advantage programs and of the industrially-injured. She has taught nursing as a lecturer-instructor at several organizations including the American Red Cross.

Toni Hathaway, LSW is a social worker and education coordinator for the KCC Kupuna Education Center with experience in caregiver support programs, case management for elders and home care worker training.

Certificates:

Currently, the program is not approved by the State of Hawaii requirements to be a Certified Nurse Aide. This MetLife Foundation project will nevertheless provide KCC with a chance to develop and evaluate this alternative curriculum to better meet Hawaii's long-term care workforce needs.  We plan to continuously review our options and opportunities over the next 12 months.  Meanwhile, students who pass the course (including written assignments, exams, and skills competencies) will receive a Certificate from Kapi'olani Community College and a description of topics and skills covered in the class to provide to employers.  Students who definitely want to become a CNA should not take this program at this time, but should pursue an approved CNA course at KCC or elsewhere.

Admission Process (Space is limited and admission is not guaranteed):

  • Have the heart and desire to care for an elder at home
  • 18 years or older
  • Attend Orientation; Complete Application and Questionnaire including 3 References with contact information
  • Participate in individual interview
  • Receive notification of admission status
  • TB Test Prior to enrollment (For locations see: Hawaii State Dept. of Health)
